Infectious diseases have affected humanity since its apparition in Africa 300,000 years ago. Demographic changes associated to the Neolithic transition, and ensuing population movements, have facilitated the emergence and expansion of those diseases around the world. The usage of ancient DNA has allowed us to have a snapshot of ancient pathogens’ genomes. In this thesis I present the genomes of different ancient pathogens associated to a global disease, to an historical individual case and to past epidemics. In the first case, we retrieve the partial genome of a European Plasmodium falciparum strain, which hints the arrival of the parasite to Europe during antiquity.
