La myogenèse correspond à la formation de fibres musculaires multinucléés à partir de progéniteurs mononucléés. Les progéniteurs musculaires sont responsables de croissance musculaire au cours du développement (myogenèse embryonnaire et fœtale), de la période périnatale et lors du processus de régénération chez l adulte.Les cellules progénitrices musculaires, exprimant le facteur de transcription Pax7, sont responsables de la croissance musculaire pendant la myogenèse fœtale. On ne connaît pas la nature et la source des facteurs régulant ces progéniteurs.
