The coal industry in the United States and in Appalachia has undergone a severe downturn over the last decade as demand for coal has fallen across the United States. The COVID-2020 pandemic weighed down on the production even more. In this report, we incorporate more recent data on coal production and employment that cover the periods through the third quarter of 2020 (for quarterly data series) or November 2020 (for monthly data series)
