Une nouvelle méthode appelée DIAMS (Desorption/Ionization on self-Assembled Monolayer Surface) a été développée pour remédier aux problèmes liés à la présence d'ions de matrice en ionisation MALDI (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization). Le principe de la méthode DIAMS est d'obtenir des spectres de masse à partir d'échantillons de faible poids moléculaire directement déposés sur une surface d'or recouverte d'une monocouche organique auto-assemblée (SAM) absorbant à la longueur d'onde du laser (337 nm).
