Les enjeux politiques de la vulgarisation scientifique

This work is to determine whether the popularization of science meets the democratic role to make the "vulgar" fit to participate in the decision-making process in a society where science is a great place. The first part discusses the various intentions attributed to scientific popularization (distract ; praise religion, reason and human, science ; generate vocations ; promote morality, self-government or critical thinking ; put science in culture ; combat specialization) testifying as scientific knowledge have been mobilized for multiple purposes. Particular attention is paid to medical popularization. The second part discusses the objections commonly addressed to the popularization of science : it would be unfaithful to science because it would blur the problematic dimension, simplify, translate in inadequate language, would be based on a misconception of the communication or human, would be a factor of social exclusion, a school of submission, would be prejudicial to freedom, demagogic, or would encourage intellelctual laziness. The third part shows that popularization of science built representations which, by their use of common sense, have a critical function and social value by promoting the deliberation consubstantial to democraty. It therefore examines the value of common sense. The fourth part is devoted to two case studies on two important areas in which democraty is threatened by the technocracy : nuclear and GMOs. It is concluded that scientific popularization is useful for democracy because it gives the floor to the people.Ce travail vise à déterminer si la vulgarisation scientifique remplit le rôle démocratique de rendre le "vulgaire" apte à participer au processus décisionnel dans une société où la science occupe une grande place. La première partie examine les diverses intentions attribuées à la vulgarisation (distraire ; faire l'apologie de la religion, de la raison et de l'homme, de la science ; susciter des vocations ; favoriser la moralité, l'autonomie ou l'esprit critique ; mettre la science en culture ; lutter contre la spécialisation) témoignant ainsi que les connaissances scientifiques ont été mobilisées à de multiples fins. Une attention particulière est portée à la vulgarisation médicale. La deuxième partie examine les objections couramment adressées à la vulgarisation : elle serait infidèle à la science car elle en gommerait la dimension problématique, la simplifierait, la traduirait en un langage inadéquat, reposerait sur une conception erronée de la communication ou de l'homme, serait un facteur d'exclusion sociale, une école de la soumission, serait attentatoire à la liberté, démagogique, ou favoriserait la paresse intellectuelle. La troisième partie montre que la vulgarisation construit des représentations qui, par leur recours au sens commun, ont une fonction critique et une valeur sociale en favorisant la délibération consubstantielle à la démocratie. Elle examine donc la valeur du sens commun. La quatrième partie est consacrée à deux études de cas portant sur deux domaines importants dans lesquels la démocratie est menacée par la technocratie : le nucléaire et les OGM.
