The aim of this work was to characterise the usefullness of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) as a sentinel fish species to assess aquatic environment contamination using a set of biomarkers. For this purpose, assays for biomarkers of xenobiotic metabolisation, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and estrogenic or androgenic endocrine disruption have been developed and validated. Our laboratory and field results show that investigated biomarkers are sensitive and inducible parameters. To run the full potential of biomarkers, basal values mesured in reference site are established and their seasonal or gender variability is characterised.
