Taking as a starting point the innovation represented in the 17th century by the first edition of the Dictionnaire de l?Académie (1694), I will look into the premises of its elaboration, in order to carry out a technical evaluation of the collective work that took place in this century. It is often assumed that unilingual dictionaries derive from bilingual (French- Latin) ones. I will discuss this filiation by showing from the study of definitions in the Thresor de la langue françoise (1606) that Jean Nicot?s approach remains fundamentally interlinguistic and that his definitions mostly belong to the encyclopaedic type.
