Introduction: Assertive Outreach (AO) is a'specialist approach to working with people with severe and enduring mental health problems who are difficult to engage. It was established in Northern Ireland for the first time during 2003 so it was possible to take the opportunity to investigate its effectiveness in this context and to also examine some of the issues raised in other countries about this approach, including the level of perceived coercion and'quality of working relationships.
