Sibling relationships

Volume I This volume comprises of two parts. The first part is a review of the literature that has contributed to the understanding of the role that siblings play in the development of emotion regulation. The second part is an empirical study that investigates the experience of growing up with a sibling who has a learning disability. The literature review put forward the argument that siblings play a significant role in the development of emotion regulation. This paper has been prepared for submission to the journal Family Processes. The empirical study utilises qualitative methodology to examine the experience of eight people who have a sibling who has a learning disability and how this has impacted on their life, when they were children and now. This paper has been prepared for submission to the British Journal of Developmental Psychology. The Public Domain Briefing Paper is also submitted in this volume. Volume II Five Clinical Practice Reports (CPR) are presented in this volume. The first report details the case of a man with a learning disability, presenting with challenging behaviours, formulated from a psychodynamic and cognitive perspective. The second report is a service evaluation of an anxiety management group for people with learning disability. The third report details the treatment of a nine-year old girl with a bird phobia. The fourth report is a case study on a seventy-two-year old man presenting with cognitive difficulties, discussed from a systemic approach. The fifth report was assessed orally and so the abstract is presented in this volume. All names and identifying features have been changed to ensure confidentiality. Although most of the studies provide support for the model, some also highlight its shortcomings; the model appears to be applicable to all types of relationships and not simply sibling relationships.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
