A Monte Carlo photon-tracing method is applied to calculation of the reflectance from alkyd paint films. Challenges inherent in the study of paint films, such as the high density of particle packing and pigment particle flocculation are considered. A naIve modification to the propagation behaviour of photons in Monte Carlo simulation geometries is proposed to account for the close packing of scattering particles and is shown to be effective when used with a reasonable correction for pigment particle flocculation.
