The short story: theory and practice

This thesis combines creative and critical writing in an inquiry into the short story as a distinctive form with its own narrative devices. The combination of creative and critical writing constitutes a discourse of poetics - that of a writer writing about her own creative work, and that of others. Therefore I would consider the entire thesis to be a poetics of practice. 1 am concerned with the form of the short story rather than with content although content will be referred to as appropriate to the analysis of my own compositional poetics, and that of other writers.
