Tilapia is one of the fastest growing aquaculture species in the world due to its biology (which makes it easy to produce), mild flavour and ease of preparation. This has led to tilapia being produced in all continents and more countries than most other farmed species and to rapidly expand from markets supplying the poorest communities in developing countries to premium markets in developed countries.
