Three contrasting classes of solid acid-base materials have been impregnated with palladium to produce active multifunctional catalysts for the one-step conversion of acetone to methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), an industrially important solvent. The Pd supported heteropolyacid, Pd/Cs2.5Ho.5PWi204o (Pd/Cs2.5PW), known to possess Bronsted acid sites high in strength, was tested in both liquid phase and gas phase reaction conditions [1]. The Pd/Cs2.5PW catalysts with low Pd concentration proved to be significantly more active in the liquid phase with a Pd loading of 0.1 wt% proving to be sufficient to give acetone conversions of up to 55% at over 90% MIBK selectivity, achieved at a temperature range of 180-200 °C. 1.EThOS - Electronic Theses Onl...
