Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family ofzinc dependant endopeptidases which selectively degrade components ofthe extracellular matrix. Degradation ofthis matrix is central to several aspects ofcardiovascular disease including adverse left ventricular remodelling, a process which is intimately linked to prognosis.
