Proteinuria and the feline kidney

In human medicine proteinuria and systemic hypertension have been implicated in the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Whilst the presence of increased concentrations of albumin within the urine may predominantly be associated with vascular changes at the level of the glomerulus, the presence of low molecular weight (LMW) proteins may be more indicative of damage at the level of the proximal tubules. In cats with CKD, proteinuria is an independent variable significantly associated with survival.
