A growing body of literature on health and social inequalities has identified Pakistanis as having a particularly heavy and premature burden of long-term ill-health compared with people from other ethnic backgrounds, and long-term sick Pakistanis are also a sub-population in the UK with disproportionately high rates of unemployment and inactivity. In this thesis, I argue that there is a need to turn fresh attention to the practical and material consequences of ill-health, and to the impact of ill-health on livelihoods.
