The point of departure for my thesis is this: the work of mourning, when comprehended in certain ways, holds an educative significance for life that is formative and transformative. It is my argument that the profundity of the educative significance of mourning lies in the way in which its work re-acquaints the mourning soul with its own human truth, which is, that to be human is to be contingent. Thus if we are to comprehend the educative significance of mourning it is first necessary to examine the contingent nature of the life that mourns and its relation to death.
