Within the framework of communicative accommodation theory, this study investigates the phonostylistic behaviour of French native speakers engaged in casual conversation. It examines some of the features speakers use to structure their discourse, particularly prosodic responses to the interlocutor and interaction management devices. Part One gives an outline of previous research in the fields of conversation analysis, prosodic analysis and accommodation theory.
