Whilst the main purpose of education is a matter for political debate, there is broad consensus that it is about the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, the development of responsible attitudes and the preparation of young people for later life and wider society (Bigger and Brown, 1999). Thus, schools, as the places where the majority of young people are formally educated (McGilchrist et al., 2004), are concerned with more than just the acquisition of knowledge.
