The application of existing geostatistical theory to the context of stream networks provides a number of interesting and challenging problems. The most important of these is how to adapt existing theory to allow for stream, as opposed to Euclidean, distance to be used. Valid stream distance based models for the covariance structure have been denied in the literature, and this thesis explores the use of such models using data from the River Tweed. The data span a period of twenty-one years, beginning in 1986. During this time period, up to eighty-three stations are monitored for a variety of chemical and biological determinands.
