This review examines the factors that contribute towards the development of parental self-efficacy. A systematic search of six databases identified 21 papers meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. There is strong evidence linking parental self-efficacy with stress, depression, infant temperament and satisfaction within the parenting role. Modest evidence suggests that social and marital supports are contributory factors. Inconclusive evidence was found for the effects of parity, parental age, infant sex, socio-economic status and level of education.
