This thesis focuses on research that was conducted in secondary schools in Zimbabwe in 2003. This study was inspired by the researcher's growing interest in continuing professional development, which started from the experience of working with newly qualified teachers (NQTs) as a headteacher in Zimbabwe in the 90s. This interest was further enhanced by the study of the induction of newly qualified teachers in Oxfordshire in 2000, and the absence of published research into the learning of novice NQTs in Zimbabwe. The study focused on exploring the experiences of NQTs during their first year of teaching in secondary schools in Zimbabwe.
