Lower motor neurons of the peripheral nervous system are responsible for innervating skeletal muscle and controlling all voluntary movements of the body. Degeneration of motor neurons underlies conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy. The identification of genetic factors that influence the form and function of the peripheral nervous system in vivo will be important for our understanding of the neuromuscular system in health and disease.
