If an empirically derived dynamical model adequately reproduces the observed dynamic behaviour of the system it represents, then the structure and the parameters of that model must encode the observed behaviours. Signature Characterisation is a method for seeking and extracting those components from the empirical model that are precursors to the changes in the system behaviours.
