The impact of applied drama : dissemination through live performance, with attention to affect

This research tests the potential for live performance to enhance the evaluation of applied drama practice through a consideration of affect. The study is conducted from the position of a research-practitioner and a qualitative methodological approach is underpinned by the combination of an ethnographical and phenomenological perspective. Based on a case study conducted at HMP Maghaberry, the research focuses on the potential of live performance to provide a holistic interpretation and re-presentation of research findings emerging from the project. Drawing on the work of prominent practitioner: theorists in the field the thesis investigates the term 'affect' in relation to the dissemination and evaluation of applied drama practice. The thesis is 'practice-led' research as distinct from 'practice-based' and reflects my dual position as researcher and theatre practitioner. The practice takes the form of a live performance: a direct response to the applied drama project in Maghaberry, and was influenced by an interrogation of contemporary affect theories. The final part of the methodology involved assessing the success of the performance in achieving research aims. The thesis concludes that live performance is a viable and potentially profoundly enhancing alternative to the more conventional and potentially restrictive forms of evaluation and dissemination that have dominated the field to date.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
