The longitudinal studies in this thesis found evidence for a causal relationship between psychological stress/negative mood and the subsequent recurrence of latent herpes virus and URTIs in chronically ill participants. These effects were much clearer than associations between stress and infection in volunteers with no chronic illness and it is possible that the latent infection leads to an immunological cost which in turn means a greater risk of URTIsEThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
