Molecular recognition is addressed in the present work, with particular reference to the vancomycin family of antibiotics and the phenomenon of cooperativity between ligand binding and dimerisation. These relatively small molecules can be used as model receptors in which single binding interactions, or non-covalent interfaces, can be studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Chapter 2 investigates the relative affinities, and effect on antibiotic dimerisation, of a series of ligands based on benzoyl-Gly-Gly to ristocetin A. In Chapter 3, an alternative model to account for increased downfield chemical shift changes of a proton as the number of ligand/antibiotic interactions is increased is discussed.
