ABSTRACT Colour appearance measurement aims to describe, both qualitatively and quantitatively, what a person experiences as colour. Unfortunately, current measurement techniques are fundamentally limited because they give observers a set of component hues - the hues they must use to describe all the colours they experience. This circular approach is also un• satisfactory based on individual variations in retinal photoreceptors.
