There is today a broad consensus in the scientific community regarding the involvement of acoustic cues in speech perception. Up to now, however, the precise mechanisms underlying the transformation from continuous acoustic stream into discrete linguistic units remain largely undetermined. This is partly due to the lack of an effective method for identifying and characterizing the auditory primitives of speech.
