In cropland soils, plant residues and microorganisms are the main sources of organic matter. Soil organic matter (SOM) represents an important pool of carbon. Mineralisation of soil organic carbon is an important issue and studies on soil organic matter degradation and/or stabilisation showed contrasted results when changing soil management. However degradation and stabilisation processes turning the fresh plant material into stabilised soil organic matter remain unclear.
