Les motifs rectifient l'écoulement de vapeur dans une direction privilégiée et le mobile est entrainé par viscosité. Sur un substrat lisse, si le solide est lui-même asymétrique, la répartition non homogène de masse incline la surface inférieure et avec elle la force de pression de l'écoulement de vapeur : sa composante horizontale met aussi l'objet en mouvement.
