Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a brominated flame retardant used into materials such as polystyrenes. Its presence in some animal origin food samples may contribute to human exposure to this endocrine disruptor. A total of 56 barrows (LWxLd) Piétrain (27.7 kg) were individually given, for total fattening or only growing period, feeds containing 32 or 297 μg α-HBCD per kg or controls. Serial slaughtering of 3 pigs per exposed or decontaminated group was performed at days 19, 49, 70, 91, and 112 to get the liver and backfat and semimembranosus muscle samples. Performance was not affected by α-HBCD exposure. With the 297 μg/kg diet, α -HBCD concentration in the muscle quickly increased up to 116 ng/g lipid at day 49. It declined down to 31 ...
