« Inspecter un corps mort » : contribution des rapports médicaux conservés sur papyrus (Ier-IVe siècles de notre ère) à l’histoire de la pratique médico-légale antique

International audienceFound in great number beneath the Egyptian sands, the Greek documentary papyri contain a great deal of information on the lifestyle, health state, diet, hygiene, accidents, diseases and epidemics of the natives, as well as on the demography and organization of medicine. Among these, twenty-six papyri of Roman and Byzantine times (I–IV AD) contain reports of inspections carried out by experts on the body of men, women and children from every social class who were victims of aggressions, fights, accidents or diseases. The Greek medical reports found in Egypt, to which no parallel can be found in the ancient world, are a part of an administrative procedure which includes several other documents: the petition, the order and the report of proceedings. The present paper examines the five known testimonies of medical inspections executed on dead bodies in Roman Egypt. All of them are dated of the II century AD and come from Oxyrhynchus, with one exception. These documents are compared with a petition and a report from the Byzantine period, also coming from Oxyrhynchus. This study, which sets out for a better understanding of the reasons why a dead body was inspected in Roman and Byzantine Egypt, takes into account the context of production of the analyzed documents in order to show their contribution in the history of ancient forensic medicine.Découverts dans les sables d’Égypte, où ils se sont conservés par centaines de milliers, les papyrus documentaires grecs donnent une foule d’informations sur le genre de vie, l’état sanitaire, l’alimentation, l’hygiène, les accidents, maladies et épidémies des autochtones, ainsi que sur la démographie et l’organisation de la médecine. Parmi ceux-ci, vingt-six papyrus d’époques romaine et byzantine (Ier–IVe s. apr. J.-Chr.) contiennent le rapport d’une inspection conduite par des experts sur le corps d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants de toutes conditions sociales, victimes d’une agression, d’une bagarre, d’un accident ou d’une maladie. Sans parallèles pour le monde antique, les rapports médicaux grecs retrouvés en Égypte constituent une partie d’une procédure administrative qui comprend plusieurs documents : la pétition, l’ordre et le compte rendu d’audience. La présente contribution expose les cinq témoignages connus d’inspections médicales effectuées sur des morts en Égypte romaine. À ces documents, tous datés du IIe siècle apr. J.-Chr. et provenant, à une exception près, d’Oxyrhynchus, en Moyenne-Égypte, sont comparés une pétition et un rapport, d’époque byzantine, provenant également d’Oxyrhynchus. En permettant de mieux comprendre les raisons pour lesquelles un corps mort était inspecté dans l’Égypte romaine et byzantine, cette étude, qui prend en compte le contexte de production de ces documents, montre leur apport à l’histoire de la pratique médico-légale antique
