Small-scale marine fisheries in the Côte d'Ivoire are at present in the hands of Ghanaian fishermen (Fante and Ewe tribes), who have a long-established tradition as seafarerers. in order to understand this situation, we have examined the historical processes leading to this Ghanaian "dynamism". Study of the timing of the expansionist movement of Ghanaian fishermen shows that the Fante and Ewe have developed different strategies, which help explain the logic of the phenomena of permanent settlement and technological change.
