Several methods and procedures exist for the diagnosis of skeletal disorders in fish. X-ray is one of the most reliable diagnosis technologies for medium-sized and large animals, whereas external examination is only of value in animals with extreme and prominent deformities. In small fish (e.g. juveniles or larvae), whole mount staining with alizarin red and/or alcian blue is advisable, although soft-tissue X-ray may be also used. Under this context, the study of the fish skeleton and its morphological and developmental disorders requires an accurate visualization of three-dimensional structures, but few widely applicable methods exist for non-destructive whole-volume imaging of animal tissues.
