High levels of physical activity (PA) have a strong and manifold influence on the course of anorexia nervosa (AN). However, this symptom is often not assessed in the clinical and scientific practice. Consequently, questions regarding the etiology of high levels of PA in AN patients remain unanswered. It is hoped that increased understanding of the factors which influence the voluntary PA levels could lead to more accurate treatments and prevention programs. Genetic factors have strong contribution to the levels of PA. It may be possible to investigate the biological pathways involved in the regulation of PA by unraveling the genetic architecture of this heritable phenotype.
