Le corps abstrait d’une princesse nuwaubienne : l’extra-terrestre comme figure de l’altérité dans l’œuvre de Juliana Huxtable

International audienceThis article stems from an aesthetic and semiotic study of Juliana Huxtable’s self-portraits as a nuwaubian princess in order to understand the stakes of the artistic use of the extraterrestrial’s figure in her work. From an analysis of the artworks and interviews of the artist, we esStablish that the extra-terrestrial self-portrait of Huxtable is, firstly, a philosophical and artistic exploration of the concept of race, considered as an abstract body, but also as a political affirmation tool, insofar as the nuwaubian creature appears as a metaphor for the otherness for the African-American artist. Finally, we notice that the artist is also close to queer theory when she approaches her intersex and transgender identity through a critical view of the representation of hermaphroditism in ancient art that she deconstructs, using the conceptions of gender in contemporary society and her afrofuturist aesthetics.Cet article procède d’une étude esthétique et sémiologique des autoportraits de Juliana Huxtable en princesse nuwaubienne afin de comprendre les enjeux de l’usage artistique de la figure de l’extra-terrestre dans son travail plastique. À partir d’une analyse des œuvres et des entretiens de l’artiste, nous établissons que l’autoportrait extra-terrestre d’Huxtable est, en premier lieu, une exploration philosophique et artistique de la notion de race, considérée comme une corporéité abstraite, mais aussi un outil d’affirmation politique, dans la mesure où la créature nuwaubienne apparaît comme une métaphore de l’altérité chez l’artiste afro-américaine. Enfin, nous constatons que l’artiste est également proche de la théorie queer lorsqu’elle aborde son identité intersexuée et transgenre en posant un regard critique sur la représentation de l’hermaphrodisme dans l’art antique qu’elle déconstruit avec les conceptions du genre de la société contemporaine et son esthétique afrofuturiste
