LES BAINS D’AL-ANDALUS : ESPACES, FORMES ET FONCTIONS (VIIIE-XVE SIECLES)

The bath in the Islamic world has been presented as an essential building dedicated to the umma, as Janine Sourdel stated in 1974 : « the ritual use of ḥammām for the ġusl explains that it ranked among the most important organs of the Islamic city ». During the Middle Ages, urban and rural areas in al-Andalus were progressively provided with baths — both Arab geographers and archaeological remains attest it. The study of eighty buildings and various texts makes it possible to closely examine the precise forms and locations of baths in the al-Andalus space. Indeed, the excavations of the last ten years as well as a new reading of Arabic texts allow one to shed new light on the andalusī ḥammām. The study of the bath’s formation in the Iberian Peninsula has led one to wonder about the future of Roman thermae and examine the influence of the Near East and North Africa in the elaboration of the ḥammām of al-Andalus. In addition, new archaeological approaches allow to draw the different stages of the bath’s construction. Making out an inventory of all the elements that compose this building then paved the way for a first typology. Finally, the point has been to follow the bathers’ steps in the different spaces dedicated to the washing, so as to better understand the practices and uses of the bath — be it public or private — from the 9th to the 15th century.Le bain dans le monde musulman est régulièrement présenté comme l’un des établissements nécessaires à la umma comme l’écrit Janine Sourdel en 1977 : « l’utilisation rituelle du ḥammām en vue de l’ablution majeure explique qu’il ait toujours été compté parmi les organes essentiels de la cité musulmane ». A l’époque médiévale, villes et campagnes d’al-Andalus sont progressivement pourvues de bains ; en témoignent les mentions des géographes arabes et les vestiges archéologiques aujourd’hui encore en place. A partir d’un corpus de quatre-vingt édifices et des sources textuelles arabes, il est possible aujourd’hui d’étudier précisément les formes et la place du bain en al-Andalus. Les fouilles archéologiques de ces dix dernières années permettent, en effet, d’observer de manière nouvelle le ḥammām andalusī tout en les associant aux textes arabes du Moyen Âge. L’étude de la formation du bain sur le territoire musulman de la Péninsule ibérique a conduit à s’interroger, dans un premier temps, sur le devenir des bains hérités de l’Antiquité romaine tout en mesurant l’apport du Proche-Orient ou du Maghreb dans l’élaboration du bain andalusī. Par ailleurs, de nouvelles approches archéologiques mises en œuvre ces dernières années ont permis de reconstituer le chantier de construction du bain. En inventoriant les différents modules architecturaux qui composent cet établissement, une première typologie des ḥammām-s andalusī-s a ainsi pu être esquissée. Dans un dernier temps, nous avons essayé de suivre les pas des baigneurs au sein de ces différents espaces dédiés à la toilette afin de comprendre pratiques et usages du bain, public ou privé, du IXe au XVe siècle
