The bath in the Islamic world has been presented as an essential building dedicated to the umma, as Janine Sourdel stated in 1974 : « the ritual use of ḥammām for the ġusl explains that it ranked among the most important organs of the Islamic city ». During the Middle Ages, urban and rural areas in al-Andalus were progressively provided with baths — both Arab geographers and archaeological remains attest it. The study of eighty buildings and various texts makes it possible to closely examine the precise forms and locations of baths in the al-Andalus space.
