The aim of this contribution is to observe how the intra-European migrants envision themselves being European through participation in the labor market. In doing so, it uses diagonal reference modeling to account for mobility effects. The mixed results indicate that classical theories of European identification do not account fully for explaining European identification of intra-European migrants. Moreover, the European Union program of free movement of labor has been successful to strengthen European identity of upwardly mobile migrants
