A SN biopsy is an accurate method to assess nodal status in breast cancer patients and has largely replaced the traditional axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) as an initial staging procedure. The clinical scenarios for the use of a SN biopsy are expanding. We reviewed the literature regarding the role of a SN biopsy in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and following neoadjuvant chemotherapy. We concluded that it could be considered on an individual basis, but we think there is insufficient evidence to recommend this as a standard procedure in these patients.
