The concept of alienation in Marxism : the case of Haiti (1946-1986)

Notre recherche doctorale démontre l’orientation anticolonialiste de la pensée marxiste haïtienne en s’appuyant sur ses deux principales sources : la négritude et la théorie de la dépendance. Cette orientation s’inscrit dans les luttes intellectuelles des haïtiens du XIXème siècle (Hannibal Price, Joseph Anténor Firmin et Louis-Joseph Janvier) contre l’Occident raciste. Notre objectif consiste à expliquer l’appropriation haïtienne du concept d’aliénation élaborée dans une confrontation avec la tradition philosophique européenne, tout en réinvestissant la question coloniale. L’étude des discours des marxistes haïtiens du milieu du XXème siècle (Étienne Charlier, Jacques Stephen Alexis, René Depestre, Gérard Pierre-Charles, Michel Hector et Yves Montas) révèle un écart avec l’épistémologie occidentale marquée par un certain eurocentrisme. En relisant les approches des « marxistes occidentaux » (Henri Lefebvre, les penseurs de l’École de Francfort et Louis Althusser), les penseurs marxistes haïtiens élaborent un nouveau concept d’aliénation ancré dans l’histoire de l’oppression coloniale et soutiennent la nature dépendante de la formation sociale haïtienne. L’enjeu est de saisir les limites de la conceptualisation haïtienne du marxisme face à une certaine tradition européenne dominante refoulant la question coloniale. Les tensions existant entre cette pensée marxiste haïtienne et les deux courants anticolonialistes (la négritude et la théorie de la dépendance) signalent un malaise théorique lié au projet de rupture avec les productions occidentales. Ce qui revient à conclure que cette orientation anticolonialiste de cette pensée reste prise dans l’ornière de la rationalité moderne et, ainsi, n’arrive pas à penser sa décolonialité.Our doctoral research demonstrates the anticolonialist orientation of Haitian Marxist thought by relying on its two main sources: blackness and the theory of dependence. This orientation is part of the intellectual struggles of nineteenth-century Haitians (Hannibal Price, Joseph Antenor Firmin and Louis-Joseph Janvier) against the racist West. Our objective is to explain the Haitian appropriation of the concept of alienation elaborated in a confrontation with the European philosophical tradition, while reinvesting the colonial question. The study of Haitian Marxist discourses of the mid-twentieth century (Étienne Charlier, Jacques Stephen Alexis, Rene Depestre, Gerard Pierre-Charles, Michel Hector and Yves Montas) reveals a gap with Western epistemology marked by a certain Eurocentrism. By re-reading the approaches of "Western Marxists" (Henri Lefebvre, the thinkers of the Frankfurt School and Louis Althusser), Haitian Marxist thinkers develop a new concept of alienation rooted in the history of colonial oppression and support the nature dependent on the Haitian social formation. The challenge is to grasp the limits of the Haitian conceptualization of Marxism in the face of a certain dominant European tradition repressing the colonial question. The tensions existing between this Haitian Marxist thought and the two anticolonialist currents (blackness and the theory of dependence) point to a theoretical malaise related to the project of rupture with Western productions. This amounts to concluding that this anticolonialist orientation of this thought remains caught in the rut of modern rationality and, thus, can not think of its decoloniality
