Despite the wide use of various steel pile sections (e.g. circular, square, H sections) and the use of cruciform structural columns, the use of steel piles of cruciform cross section has not been explored. Cruciform piles could present some advantages compared to conventional circular piles such as the reduction in the amount of energy and vibration required during the installation process. This study investigates the performance of cruciform piles embedded in sand under lateral loading. A range of slenderness ratios and two different loading directions are tested.
