Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging of noble gases has the potential of becoming an important method for the medical diagnosis of pulmonary disease. Furthermore, the high solubility of xenon-129 in liquids might enable to use it as NMR tracer in the blood circuit. This report summarises the first steps undertaken in this laboratory concerning noble gas NMR imaging. The first part gives an overview of the properties and potential applications of noble gases in NMR imaging and spectroscopy. The second part is focused on hyperpolarisation of noble gases by means of optical pumping. The principles of the two currently used techniques are described.
