International audienceDespite their different demographic weight and their sometimes conflictual relations, China and Vietnam present common features with respect to their political, economic, and social history (imperial and then communist regimes). The two countries opened up to the market economy: beginning in 1978 for China and 1986 for Vietnam. Both countries also experienced a rapid demographic transition strongly organised by their communist governments. However, while birth control policies were rigorous, indeed coercitive, in China, Vietnam opted for a more flexible policy both in terms of its goal as in the way in which it was implemented.
