Herculaneum

The archaeological site of Roman Herculaneum is in and partly under the modern Italian town of Ercolano in Campania, Southern Italy, 7 km west of Mount Vesuvius on the coast of the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was destroyed and buried along with the nearby towns of Pompeii, Stabiae, and Oplontis in 79 CE when Mount Vesuvius erupted. Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997 because they “provide a complete and vivid picture of society and daily life at a specific moment in the past that is without parallel anywhere in the world.
