A STUDY ON THE TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING SPEAKING FOR THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA YAYASAN PANDAAN

Speaking is one of the four language skills that must be mastered by Indonesian students whom are learning English as a foreign language. In order to make students speak well, there should be an English teacher. In the teaching and learning process, the teacher should encourage and motivate students to study more about English by using some suitable techniques in teaching speaking. In this study students of grade XI at science class of SMA Yayasan Pandaan were more enthusiastic to the lesson that the orther classes. Moreover, the student enjyoed every activity given by their teacher. It was also known that the ability of students in speaking English was higher than the other classes. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking in grade XI Science of SMA Yayasan Pandaan and to know the students’ response to those techniques. This study used descriptive research in order to explain the teaching techniques used by the teacher in speaking class at SMA Yayasan Pandaan. This study was conducted in descriptive qualitative design which was purposefully applied to get rich data of the topic discussed. The research subjects of this study was English teacher and students of grade XI at science class. Those participants were involved on questionnaire, observation, lesson plan and interview sections to encounter the needed data. The result showed that there were three techniques used by the teacher such as prepared talk, communication game, and role play. Furthermore, the students generally had native language and student-initiated response toward the teaching technique used by the teacher. The students enjoyed and felt free to speak up during the class. Moreover, the techniques increase their ability and self-confident in speaking English
