Jedoch ist dies kein Phänomen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. In der zweiten Hälfte des 18. und in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts hatte die britische East India Company, EIC, das Monopol für die Opiumproduktion und war für die Verbreitung der Droge in Asien, vor allem in China, verantwortlich.
