Computer simulation of electrically stimulated nerve fibers in the human spinal cord

Zsfassung in dt. SpracheIm unteren Rückenmark befinden sich Mustergeneratoren die Bewegungen erzeugen die der Schrittbewegung ähnlich sind. Es wurde gezeigt, dass diese Mustergeneratoren durch epidurale und transkutane Stimulation aktiviert wer- den können.Diese Arbeit zielt darauf ab frühere Simulation zu verbessern. Dies wird erzielt in dem ein anderes Nervenmodell eingesetzt wird, das McIntyre et al. (2002) Modell, und indem unterschiedlich Faserklassen simuliert werden. Es wurde zuvor gezeigt, dass dieses Modell Schwellenwerte aufweist die den experimentellen Resultaten entsprechen, jedoch musste es neu implementiert werden, damit die extrazelluläre Stimulation berechnet werden kann.Die Simulationen zeigen, dass die Wurzelfasern und die Nerven der Hinterstrangbahnen eine Rolle bei der Aktivierung der Mustergeneratoren haben und die berechneten Schwellenwerte stimmen mit den Schwellenwerten von Experimenten überein.There are pattern generators in the human lower spinal cord that produce stepping-like movements. It has been shown that these pattern generators can be activated by epidural and transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation.This work mainly focuses on improving previous simulations by using the axon model of McIntyre, Richardson, and Grill (2002). In contrast to models used before, this new approach produces threshold values that are in accor- dance with experimental results. The fibers responsible for the activation are identified. For the simulation it was necessary to reimplement the axon model. Two different fiber classes are simulated, the root fibers (afferent and efferent) and the dorsal column fibers.The simulation demonstrates that both, the root fibers and the dorsal column fibers are involved in the stimulation and that this new simulation produces threshold values that are comparable with experimental results.7
