EVALUATION OF SINGLE-DOSE SPECTINOMYCIN TREATMENT FOR INTRACTABLE GONOCOCCAL URETHRITIS IN MEN AND BACTERIOLOGICAL STUDY OF NEISSERIA GONORRHOEAE

Twenty-six male patients with intractable gonococcal urethritis were treated with an intramuscular injection of spectinomycin 2.0 g. Overall clinical efficacy was 84.6%: excellent in 18 cases and good in 4. The response was poor in 4 cases. These 4 poor cases, however, were cured with an additional injection ofspectinomycin 4.0 g. No subjective side effects were observed. In antibacterial activity tests, spectinomycin and penicillin G were comparatively examined as to their MICs against 33 clinically isolated strains of N.gonorrhoeae. MICs of penicillin G ranged widely from 0.0125 pg/ml to 100 pg/ml, 48.5% of the isolates being resistant. MICs of spectinomycin ranged from 1.6 pg/ml to 100 pg/ml, and 42.4% of the isolates were sensitive at 6.25 pg/ml. No correlation in sensitivity was noted between the two antibiotics
