The rare earth elements (REE) are a group of metallic elements used in many modern technologies. Their worldwide production is limited, hence it is necessary to find more sources. The REE are divided in light REE and heavy REE, the latter being rarer and with more industrial uses. Alkaline granites and associated pegmatites are rocks rich in heavy REE. Part of this enrichment is known to be magmatic, but the role of hydrothermal fluids (mostly water, CO2 and/or methane) in concentrating and fractionating these elements remains unclear.
